Privacy Policy
Brief is a dating app made by White Cat Cloud Inc. (“we”). This policy explains what we collect when you use Brief, why, who helps us process it, how long we keep it, and the choices you have. We wrote it to match how the app actually works.
The short version
- We never store your phone number. Sign-in is handled by Google Firebase; our database holds only an account identifier from it.
- Video calls are encrypted between your phone and our video service, and never recorded. We do not keep any audio or video from a call.
- Your location is rounded to about 1 km before we store it.
- We do not sell or share your personal information for advertising, and Brief has no ads.
- When a match ends, everything between the two of you is deleted.
What we collect
- Account: an account identifier from Firebase Authentication, your date of birth (to confirm you are 18 or over), your account status, and when you accepted the safety notice.
- Profile: your first name, gender, height, what you are looking for, the line you write after “Ask me about…”, your time zone, the hours you are free for calls, and your filters (who, what age, how far).
- Age check: we ask Apple whether you are an adult; we keep the answer (adult, under 18, declined or not available), how Apple knows, and when we asked — not your age range.
- Selfies: photos you take with the in-app camera. Location data and other metadata are removed on your phone before upload. On iPhone, a short head-turn check runs before the photo is taken; it runs on your phone, nothing about your face is kept or sent, and only the photo you choose is uploaded.
- Approximate location: your position rounded to about 1 km, and a city name, so we can show you people nearby. We do not track your location in the background.
- Activity: likes and passes, matches, booked calls, call timing (when a call started and ended, not its content), and your answer after a call.
- Messages: text messages with people you have connected with. They are end-to-end encrypted: the key that reads them is made on your phone and is never sent to us (it can travel only inside your own encrypted iPhone backup), and we store only a form we cannot read.
- Notifications: a push token so we can notify you, and your notification preference.
- Purchases: if you buy a plan, Apple tells us which product you bought, when it renews or ends, and a transaction reference. We never see your card or payment details.
- Reports: if you report someone, the reason and anything you write, plus copies of both people's current selfies, kept as a safety record — and, if you report someone you have been messaging and leave the option on, the last messages of that chat (up to 30), which your phone sends with the report so we can read them. We keep them as you sent them.
- Technical data: error reports from our servers, with the text you typed removed.
What we do not collect
We do not record calls, read your contacts, access your photo library, track you across other apps or websites, or use advertising identifiers.
Why we use it
To run the service: to create your account, confirm you are an adult, show you people who match what you both want, arrange and connect calls, deliver messages and notifications, provide the plans you buy, keep the community safe (reports, blocks and suspensions), and fix problems. We do not use your data for advertising or sell it.
Who helps us
We use these service providers, only for the purposes above and under their own security commitments:
- Google Firebase — sign-in by phone number (Firebase holds your phone number) and push notifications.
- Cloudflare — private storage for selfies, and this website.
- LiveKit — carries live video calls between two phones. Calls are encrypted on the way and pass through LiveKit's servers while they happen. They are never recorded.
- DigitalOcean — hosts our servers and database in the United States.
- Sentry — error reports from our servers, with what you typed removed.
- Apple — in-app purchases and the App Store.
We may disclose information when the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety.
What other people see
People who match your filters (and whose filters you match) see your first name, age, height, distance, city, intentions, your “Ask me about…” line and your selfie. Nobody sees who liked them. Your messages are seen only by the person you sent them to — and, if either of you reports the other, by our safety team (the last messages of that chat, as the reporting phone sent them).
How long we keep it
- A like you gave is hidden after 14 days if it did not match, and a pass after 30 days.
- When a match ends — someone says no, a match expires, someone blocks or reports — the messages, bookings, calls and answers between the two of you are deleted. We keep only a one-way fingerprint of the pair so the two of you are not shown to each other again.
- When you delete your account, we delete your profile, selfies, hours, messages and everything between you and others. We keep a minimal record of the account (its identifier and status, but no profile), so that blocks and suspensions keep working if the same phone number returns; your safety-notice acceptance, which the law requires us to be able to prove; if the account was blocked because it belongs to someone under 18, that block and the answer behind it; and any reports.
- Purchase records are kept as long as needed for accounting and to restore what you bought.
Your choices and rights
You can change your profile, filters, hours and notification style in the app, and delete your account from the Account tab at any time. If you live in California or another state with a privacy law, you can ask us what personal information we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, or for a copy; we will not treat you differently for asking. We do not sell or share personal information as those laws define it. To make a request, email [email protected]; we will confirm the request comes from the account holder before acting on it.
Security
Data travels encrypted, and calls are encrypted while they travel. Selfies are stored in a private bucket and shown through links that expire after minutes, and they are kept only in your phone's memory, never saved to its storage. Messages are end-to-end encrypted. A new phone set up without a backup of your old one cannot show messages from before it was set up. Screenshots and screen recordings of faces are blocked in the app. No system is perfectly secure, and we will tell you if a breach affects you as the law requires.
Adults only
Brief is for people 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone younger, and we close accounts that appear to belong to a minor.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.
